The Tūī is a medium-sized, endemic New Zealand bird known for its iridescent plumage, distinctive white throat tufts (poi), and extraordinary vocal abilities.
Appearance
Tūī appear black from a distance, but in sunlight their feathers shimmer with blue, green, and bronze iridescence. They have two curled white feather tufts on the throat (poi) and delicate white feathers on the nape, creating a collar effect. Adults have a notch on the 8th primary feather, which produces a whirring sound in flight. Both sexes share similar plumage, though males are slightly larger. Juveniles are browner and lack the throat tuft initially.
Vocalizations
Tūī are highly vocal, producing a complex mix of melodious notes, grunts, coughs, clicks, and wheezes. They can mimic other birds and even human-made sounds like phone ringtones. Their song is often interspersed with noisy wingbeats during flight.
